LCI’s English Lessons

When thinking of English lessons, it’s common to associate grammar lessons in the learning process.  English grammar lessons, while seemingly basic, are actually quite complex.  At LCI, we teach proper grammar, which includes punctuation, usage, and sentence structure in writing.  While grammar is often best learned in the context of reading and writing the language, English grammar exercises are also used to practice and develop skills.  These skills, then, are transferred into the final step of the equation, which is the ability to participate in conversational English.

English Language Lessons

At LCI, you can take English language lessons in either group or private classes.  Our qualified and experienced ESL teachers deliver curriculum specifically designed to range from beginning to advanced levels.  Our lessons meet the variety of needs that each unique student brings to the classroom, and you can work at a pace that best suits your individual needs.  Additionally, we offer specific curriculums for both college-bound students and business executives.

If you are developing English skills in order to gain entry into an American college, we offer TOEFL preparation classes as well as English writing and grammar lessons.  Similarly, if you are a business executive who is seeking advancement through ESL classes, we provide business writing courses as well as lessons in English conversation.  Additionally, we offer lessons in English cultural nuances that are pertinent for any ESL learner.  While becoming competent in English writing and speaking is key to a successful academic and business career, there are undertones and unspoken rules possessed by each culture that can be confusing.  At LCI, our lessons focus on business issues such as etiquette, which include instruction on proper business behavior ranging from rules of dining, tipping, and manners to proper dress and social behavior.

Learn English Grammar

English grammar exercises teach you basic English rules that focus on sentence structure details.  As in any language, understanding the grammar rules can certainly be a challenge (particularly as it can seem like there are exceptions to every rule).  Still, meaning can become skewed and misunderstood without proper grammar.  We provide English grammar exercises and lessons to help you develop more confidence in your writing skills.  Because writing in English is the best way to learn sentence structure basics, grammar is a part of any English as a second language course.  With increased practice writing in English, you will inevitably pick up and master grammar techniques.

Conversational English

While learning to write English with proper grammar is important, learning conversational English is equally central to our ESL programs.  Often, possessing the ability to read and write in a foreign language is only the first step in developing fluency.  However, due to different tones, accents, and word meanings of the diverse group of English speakers, the ability to hold a conversation in English takes additional practice.
Therefore, we provide a variety of lessons in conversational English, including practice with idioms, listening drills, and pronunciation.

Understanding idioms, for example, is commonly confusing to ESL learners.  Learning only formal English makes it hard to understand situations when English speakers use words out of context or in a different meaning.  For example, when an English speaker says, “My dog kicked the bucket,” the speaker is explaining that his dog has died, not that it literally kicked a bucket with its legs.  While this is only one idiom that is commonplace in conversational English, we prepare our students to understand many unpredictable expressions in order to better communicate with co-workers, fellow students, and teachers.  Additionally, listening drills will help you quickly pick up meaning and better understand English speakers.  We teach tips so that you can listen to the key elements of a conversation even if you cannot completely understand the full meaning right away.  Finally, LCI students learn proper pronunciation of words and practice speaking the English language with the correct accent.

While grammar lessons are an integral component to all English lessons, there’s more to learning the language than learning English grammar.  A combination of English grammar exercises, English writing, and lessons in conversational English are all integral to your development and success, and are all valued components to our ESL program.
