ESL Programs: University Prep Courses
University Prep is designed for ESL speakers to help prepare them for admission and success at the university or graduate level of studies at an American university. These ESL programs help them to improve skills needed to optimize their university/graduate school performance and prepare them to successfully complete the GRE and TOEFL exams. University Prep consists of five individual classes: university-level writing, GRE preparation, TOEFL preparation (refresher), public speaking and presentations, and advanced grammar.
Prerequisite- Completion of LCI’s Academic English ESL program or an advanced level of English.
University-level writing
This course will give students practice in university level writing including essays, reports, summaries and a research paper. Rhetorically the course will focus on the incorporation of outside materials into student writing. These ESL programs will cover documentation, paraphrasing and summary and précis writing. The courses begin with a review of essay writing and quickly moves to the special problems of university writing in which the students are required to use the ideas of others as well as their own in their writing.
GRE preparation
This class will cover all three sections of the GRE: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Students will be given detailed explanations of each section along with exercises and practice exams to improve test taking skills while familiarizing students with the exam format and increasing confidence.
TOEFL preparation (refresher)
In this class the students of the ESL programs will practice the TOEFL skills and question types they learned in level five so that they can maintain their level of proficiency before they take the test or improve their score on an upcoming test. This is a refresher course and the students are assumed to have a basic understanding of the TOEFL. New materials will be used in this course.
Advanced grammar
This is a grammar ESL program based on the needs of the university student writer. The topics covered will enrich student writing and allow students to express themselves more efficiently and effectively. Topics covered will include the advanced use of adjective and adverb clauses, the use of modals and conditionals, and the grammar of citations.
Public speaking and presentations
In this class students will give both prepared and extemporaneous presentations and to participate in scheduled and unscheduled debates and class discussions. The student will learn the elements of effective public speaking and how to combine them for presentations appropriate for a university setting. In addition, students will practice the different types of speeches and presentations and learn to use appropriate visuals.
